Frequently Asked Questions
The basics. If your question isn't here, contact us.
What is SteepList?
SteepList is a community-driven deal sharing site. Users post deals they find, and the community votes on them. Good deals rise to the top, bad ones sink. No algorithms, no affiliate manipulation.
Is SteepList free?
Yep, totally free to use. You can browse, vote, comment, and post deals without paying anything. We have an optional Pro membership ($3/mo) that gives you faster deal alerts and removes display ads, but it's not required for anything.
How do I post a deal?
Click "Post a Deal" in the nav bar. You'll need an account (takes 30 seconds to create). Include the product name, the sale price, the retailer, and a link. Add a coupon code if there is one. The more detail you include, the more upvotes you'll get.
Do you use affiliate links?
No. User-posted deals link directly to the retailer with no affiliate tracking. We make money through display ads and Pro memberships, not commissions on your purchases. This is the whole point of SteepList.
What does the voting do?
Votes determine how deals are ranked. Deals with more upvotes appear higher on the front page. This means the community decides what's a good deal, not an algorithm or a paid placement.
What does "YMMV" mean?
Your Mileage May Vary. It means the deal might not be available everywhere -- could be regional, in-store only, limited stock, or based on account-specific pricing. If you see a YMMV tag, don't be surprised if it doesn't work for you.
A deal I found is expired. What do I do?
Click the "Expired" button on the deal page. This flags it for our mods and adds an expired label so others don't waste their time. Don't downvote expired deals -- they were good deals when they were posted.
How does karma work?
You earn karma when people upvote your deals or comments. You lose karma when they downvote. Karma doesn't do much right now beyond bragging rights and a few badges, but we might add perks for high-karma users eventually.
Can I post deals for my own business?
No. Self-promotion is against our guidelines. SteepList is for sharing deals you find as a consumer, not advertising your store. If we catch self-promotion, the posts get removed.
How do deal alerts work?
You can set up alerts for specific keywords and price points. When a new deal matching your criteria gets posted, we'll email you (or push notification if you enable it). Free accounts get up to 10 alerts. Alerts expire after 60 days of inactivity but you can reactivate them.
